LATF concludes Inter-agency Awareness Workshops for Kenya, Uganda and Zambia

Inter-agency workshops are designed to enhance the competences, knowledge, skills and networking of officers from the Lusaka Agreement member states as well as the Task Force to effectively combat trafficking and illegal trade in wild fauna and flora. The workshops were held against the background of rampant illicit wildlife trade in the region evident in the large wildlife contraband originating in Africa seized overseas and the need to stem this vice.

Mombasa-Kenya Workshop

Lusaka-Zambia Workshop

LATF jointly with KWS undertook a two-day interagency awareness workshop from 24th to 25th November 2011 at the Baobab Resort Hotel, Mombasa for law enforcement officers from Customs, Kenya Airports Authority, Kenya Ports Authority, Port Police and Kenya Wildlife Service. Twenty two (22) participants drawn from these institutions attended the workshop. Resource persons were drawn from the KWS, LATF, KRA Customs - Regional Intelligence Liaison Office Eastern & Southern Africa Office (RILO-ESA), Interpol Regional Bureau-Kenya and Ethics & Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)-Kenya. The workshop was officially opened by the Assistant Director for the Tsavo Conservation Area Mr. Wilson Korir.

This two-day inter-agency workshop was facilitated by LATF and organized jointly with Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to sensitize other LEAs especially those manning entry/exit points.  It was held from 28th to 29th November 2011 at the Garden House Hotel, Mumbwa Road, Lusaka for twenty four (24) law enforcement officers drawn from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA)-Customs, National Airport Corporation, Police, Anti Corruption Commission, Drug Enforcement Commission, Plant/Phytosanitary Unit, Airport Cargo Handling and Zambia Wildlife Authority. The Resource persons were drawn from ZAWA, LATF, ZRA, Interpol, Directorate of Public Prosecutions and Anti Corruption Commission. The Workshop was officially opened by Hon. Wylbur Simuusa (MP), Minister for Mines and Natural Resources of the Republic of Zambia.

Mbarara-Uganda Workshop

The Lusaka Agreement Task Force (LATF) jointly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) organized and convened a two-day interagency wildlife awareness workshop at the Acacia Hotel in Mbarara, Western Uganda from 1st to 2nd December   2011.
The objective of the workshop was to raise awareness among various partners on the need to share information and have concerted efforts to conserve wildlife resources of Uganda.
The workshop was attended by 30 participants drawn from the Uganda Judiciary, Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Uganda Police, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), UWA and the Internal Security Organization.
Resource persons were drawn from the Uganda Revenue Authority, Uganda Police, Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Judiciary, Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Lusaka Agreement Task Force.
The workshop was opened by Mr. Edgar Buhanga, Senior Planning and EIA Coordinator who represented the Executive Director of Uganda Wildlife Authority.
On 2nd December 2011, the participants were taken on a guided tour of Lake Mburo National Park to appreciate the values of wildlife conservation.

In the workshops, the participants gained useful insights into the intricacies of illegal wildlife trade and formulated strategies for effective collaboration and networking among the agencies.
