LATF INVOLVED WITH ISS AND EAPCCO IN A REGIONAL TRAINING FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FROM EIGHT EAST AFRICAN COUNTRIES
The above training which was held in Kampala, Uganda from 2nd to 6th August 2010, was organized by the Institute of Security Studies (ISS) in conjuction with the East African Police Chiefs Co-operation Organization (EAPCCO). The training brought together 25 participants from eight East African countries namely Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and various organizations and Institutions which included, ICPO- INTERPOL, National Environment Agencies, Forestry and Wildlife Authorities.
The training was facilitated by the ISS’s Senior Legal Advisor, Dr Rose Mwebaza and Dr. Akech Migai, a consultant who contributed to meeting its main objective by equipping the law enforcement officers with requisite knowledge and skills to enhance enforcement of environment crime laws. LATF Intelligence officer, Mr. Karl Karugaba participated in the training and gave presentations on the Lusaka Agreement’s experiences in combating environmental crime. The training was a great opportunity for networking and exchanging more information and experiences which are useful in planning similar capacity building programs in future. It was also an avenue to reach out to other agencies to appreciate the values of the environment including the lesser known wildlife species.
The Lusaka Agreement Task Force congratulated and thanked ISS and EAPCCO for the initiative as it assured them of its continued support in such joint programmes for the region.
