MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE WORLD
CUSTOMS ORGANIZATION (WCO) AND THE LUSAKA AGREEMENT TASK FORCE (LATF)
WCO and LATF have recently concluded a Memorandum
of Understanding that will enable the two institutions consult on
policy and matters of mutually interest for the purpose of achieving
their objectives and coordinating their respective activities.
This Agreement was inspired by the need to enhance strategic cooperation
and complementarity in the missions of the two institutions i.e.
WCO’s mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency
of Customs administrations in the area of compliance with trade
regulations, protection of society and revenue collection, thereby
contributing to the economic and social well being of nations. On
the other hand, LATF’s mission is to support member states
and collaborating partners in reducing and ultimately eliminating
illegal trade in wild fauna and flora. In a nutshell, the two Parties
underscore the significance of the fact that illegal trade in wild
fauna and flora is detrimental to the world’s ecosystems and
prejudicial to the planet’s natural heritage and the economic
interest of States.
The pact will be anchored on four facets which include Mutual Consultation,
Exchange of Information, Reciprocal Representation and Technical
Cooperation in any of their fields and projects that are of mutual
interest.
LATF is optimistic that this partnership will yield
great benefits to both organizations as well as their affiliated
entities.
